A Brief History of The Spitfire

Few aircraft carry the cultural weight of the Supermarine Spitfire. Eighty-plus years after it first took to the skies over Southampton, the sight and sound of a Merlin-powered Spitfire still stops airshow crowds cold. But behind the elliptical wings and the Rolls-Royce growl is the design story of a fighter that started with one man’s racing-plane instincts and ended the war almost unrecognizable from where it began.

The Spitfire's lineage traces back to R.J. Mitchell, a Supermarine designer who had spent the early 1930s chasing speed records with the company's Schneider Trophy seaplanes. That background shows up directly in the Spitfire’s most famous feature, its thin, semi-elliptical wing. Aerodynamicist Beverley Shenstone designed the wing to be thin enough to reduce drag at high speed while still housing retractable landing gear, guns, and ammunition. That balancing act made the wing notoriously difficult to manufacture. By some estimates it took roughly three times as many man-hours to build as the wing on its main German adversary, the Messerschmitt Bf 109.

Mitchell never saw his design go to war. He died in 1937, a year after the prototype, K5054, made its first flight on March 5, 1936. It fell to his successor, Joe Smith, to shepherd the Spitfire through every subsequent mark.

By the summer of 1940, nineteen RAF Fighter Command squadrons were flying Spitfires, most of them the Mk I and the newly arriving Mk II, which added a more powerful 1,175 hp Merlin XII and a Coffman cartridge starter for faster scrambles from dispersed airfields. 

Doctrine during the Battle of Britain generally paired the two RAF fighters by strength. Spitfire squadrons were tasked with engaging the Bf 109 escorts, freeing Hawker Hurricanes to concentrate on the bomber formations. Over the course of the battle, Spitfires accounted for 529 German aircraft destroyed, including 282 Bf 109s, at a cost of 361 Spitfires lost.

The Hurricane actually claimed more kills overall during the battle. But it was the Spitfire, which was faster, more modern-looking, and matched almost evenly against the Luftwaffe’s best fighter, that captured the public imagination and became shorthand for the RAF’s defense of Britain.

What separates the Spitfire from most other WWII fighters is the fact that it kept changing for the entire war. IWM historians describe it as the only Allied front-line fighter in complete and continuous development from the war's start to its finish. Early Merlin engines produced roughly 990 hp; by the Mk IX, that figure had climbed to around 1,700 hp, and later marks would move to the larger Rolls-Royce Griffon engine entirely. Armament shifted too, from eight .303 machine guns on early aircraft to combinations of cannons and machine guns on later variants. Between 1937 and 1947, factories turned out more than 20,000 Spitfires across 24 marks. It was a production run so large that 238 still survive today, with around 54 of them airworthy.

That relentless development is exactly where a book like Spitfire Vol. 1: Supermarine's Spitfire Marques I to VII and Seafire Marques I to III earns its keep. Author Ron Mackay walks through the early marks in the sequence they entered service, tracing the airframe from the Mk II through the lesser-known Mk III and into photo-reconnaissance conversions and high-altitude experimental variants. The book features mark-by-mark detail that’s easy to lose in broader histories of the aircraft.

The book’s second half covers a chapter of Spitfire history that gets far less attention: its life as a carrier fighter. The Admiralty first floated the idea of a navalized Spitfire in 1938, but the project was shelved so land-based production could be prioritized ahead of the Battle of Britain. By late 1941, with carrier air groups badly in need of a modern fighter, the Navy revisited the idea, and 48 Spitfire Mk Vbs were converted into the first Seafire Mk Ibs.

Early Seafires suffered from fuselages too weak for the stresses of carrier landings, requiring reinforcing strips around hatch openings just to hold together. The Mk IIc, based on the Spitfire Vc, became the first version designed as a naval fighter from the start, and the Mk III finally added manually folding wings so more aircraft could be stowed on deck. 

Even then, the Seafire's narrow undercarriage track made it a handful on a pitching flight deck. During the 1943 landings at Salerno, calm seas robbed pilots of the headwind they needed, and aircraft repeatedly missed the arrestor wires or tore hooks off their fuselages in the crash barriers.

The Spitfire's arc is really a story about how far a good airframe can be pushed beyond what it was originally built for. That's the throughline Spitfire Vol. 1 is built around, with camouflage schemes, ground equipment, servicing routines, and operational photography showing what these aircraft actually looked like in France, North Africa, and aboard Royal Navy carriers.
